I am a great admirer of Oz as a novelist, of his spare, quiet portraits of intimacy between couples, but here, in this long book, he reveals a huge talent for the big narrative picture, for Dickensian character portraits and an expert fusion of history and personal life.įrom the outset the family bears down on you. It is one of the funniest, most tragic and most touching books I have ever read. Oz's memoir, A Tale of Love and Darkness, thought to be the biggest-selling literary work in Israeli history, is an exploration of why his mother killed herself, and the effect on him, a sensitive, intelligent boy growing up in Jerusalem during the last years of the British mandate and the war of independence. ![]() ![]() ![]() You're better off seeing Wonderworks' productions of "Anne of Green Gables" or "Girl of the Limberlost. Stephens gives a gentle, understated performance as her patient, understanding Dad. But the worst thing is the synthesized music score! Lawns are trimmed and fenced, house interiors are too bright for oil lamps, and everyone has clean, starched clothes. The production design of "Caddie" is too bright and clean for what should be a scraggly, woodsy primitive home in a remote area of the American wilderness. Based on a classic children's novel of a tomboy in 1865 Wisconsin who helps avert an Indian massacre, the book is not as well-known as the "Little House" series, the first of which, "Little House in the Big Woods" also takes place in Wisconsin, in 1860. ![]() This was made a few years after Wonderworks' presentation of the Canadian Broadcast Company's terrific "Anne of Green Gables," and "Caddie" just doesn't compare. ![]() ![]() Ephron still remembers the first day of her journalism class. The actual fight scene played out so well in my head, the descriptions were perfection. ![]() ![]() The final battle commences, Kylie is learning how to fight, and is ready to protect those important to her at any cost. It’s time for the final battle, our girl has grown up so much the last couple of years, she has realized you must sometimes make large sacrifices in order to save those you love. Loyalties are questioned, and tough decisions must be made. Kylie starts out living with her grandparents, but is stuck between the family she has blood-ties to, and the family she has gained at Shadow Falls. Kylie has always been a strong character, and she has her best friends, Della and Miranda making sure she’s taken care of. It was amazing to see all the pieces come together, every loose end tied, and the ending we’ve waited five novels to see! She has Mario coming after her, and a bloody ghost haunting her to kill an enemy. This time around, it’s Kylie who needs protecting. She has great powers, but is only able to use them as a protector. I read the book slowly, enjoying each chapter. Excited to find out where Kylie ends up in life, sad to say goodbye. I was so excited and sad at the same time. Chosen at Nightfall is the final installment of the Shadow Falls series. ![]() ![]()

In 1844, Marx and Engels met in Paris, becoming close friends and collaborators. Under threat of censorship, Marx left Prussia with his wife, Jenny von Westphalen, to live in France. Around the same time, Marx edited a German newspaper, advocating for the rights of the masses and pushing its editorial line in a more revolutionary direction. At a young age, both men found an affinity with the works of German philosopher Georg Hegel, whose theory that societal progress is the result of conflicting elements had a strong influence over their political writings. They had markedly different upbringings: Marx’s father supported his academic pursuits (albeit insisting his son studied law rather than philosophy), while Engels was pushed into joining his father’s business.
